Dick Nowakowski to Kayak Manhattan's Sewers in Aid of the Homeless

With the sting of salty tears still fresh on his face after failing to qualify for the U.S. Olympic kayak team for a record 7th consecutive year, Canadian-born humanitarian Dick Nowakowski is set to paddle his way into the annals of sports history by becoming the first person to successfully navigate the sewers of Manhattan by kayak. Equipped with flash light and World War II vintage gas mask, Dick will brave both hardship and danger as he struggles to complete his objective with only his paddle and wits to defend against marauding rats, sewer dwellers and human waste. Dick will begin his epic voyage by dropping into the tepid waters flowing beneath Park Avenue at E 42nd St. He will paddle, slip, slide and scrape his way north to E 84th St. where he hopes to pass the always treacherous 84th St. rapids and then empty out into the tranquil waters of Central Park's Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Resevoir. If you live along Park Avenue, Dick asks that you flush your toilets twice in support of Dick's journey at precisely 10am on January 20th, 2005.

Dick will be paddling to raise awareness for the plight of the homeless in New York City.

Nowakowski to bring Christmas Cheer to the St. Lawrence

Christmas comes early to the St. Lawrence River this year as Dick Nowakowski once again dons his red neoprene Santa suit. He will spend 3 fun-filled days clinging to Buoy No. 317 shouting "Feliz Navidad" and "Maligayang Pasko" to the largely Filipino crews of the tankers sailing for Montreal, Quebec. After being pulled from the icy waters of the St. Lawrence last year by a passing Dutch trawler, Dick has returned in 2004 fully prepared for the challenge with an upgraded thermal survival suit, complete with with faux white mink trim. Come down to the banks of the St. Lawrence near Repentigny, Quebec from December 21 - 23, to wave your support. If you are lucky, you may find one of Santa Dick's festive candy canes washed up on shore. Fun for the whole family. A sight not to be missed.
